Out of the Dark and Into the Light

Why Lighting is So Important

think having a "green" home is impossible? Think again!Did you know that you need seven sources of light to properly illuminate a space. You're probably thinking, "Seven?? I think I have one lonely lamp in the corner on that end table…" More often than not, we walk into rooms and decorating projects where there is a lot of discussion about color and furniture and window treatments. This all great! However, the one area that gets overlooked the most is lighting (besides accessorizing, but that's for another article).

The one area that gets overlooked the most is lighting.

Lighting not only serves a function but creates warmth and ambiance. There are three types of lighting: general or ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.

General Lighting General Lighting provides an area with overall illumination. Also known as ambient lighting, general lighting radiates a comfortable level of brightness, enabling one to see and walk about safely. It can be accomplished with chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights, and with lanterns outside your home. A basic form of lighting that replaces sunlight, general lighting is fundamental to a lighting plan.

When assessing a room, we look at the overall quality of the lighting, what tasks might be performed, and are there objects of interest that need to be highlighted.

Task Lighting Task Lighting helps you perform specific tasks such as reading, sewing, cooking, homework, hobbies, games, or working on the computer. It can be provided by recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting, and portable lamps. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eyestrain.

Accent Lighting Accent Lighting adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As part of a decorating scheme, it is used to spotlight paintings, houseplants, sculpture, and other prized possessions, or to highlight the texture of a wall, drapery or outdoor landscaping. Accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting around it. This usually is provided by track, recessed, or wall-mounted fixtures.

Color, by its mere being, relies on light and how your eye sees it, to be that color.

Do these light sources add up to seven? Sources of light come from not only table lamps and recessed lighting but from windows and candlelight, as well. Or even a fire in a fireplace can be considered a source of light. That's great mood lighting right there!

Look around your room and see what kind of reflective surfaces you have.

It's always easier to put a lighting plan together at the beginning of a remodeling project or when building a new home. With an existing space, you can call in an electrician or there are many easy options for plug in sconces or candelabras. Look around your room and see what kind of reflective surfaces you have. Mirrors or glass doors on a cabinet will reflect light and "add" an additional source of light. In Victorian times, homeowners (okay, the butler) would put out cut crystal glasses on a sideboard in a triangular formation to reflect the candlelight off the dining room table.

Lighting will make all the difference in the world in how colors in a room interact with each other and how you feel around those colors.

For entertaining, you might want a brighter, more energetic atmosphere or when you want to wind down, you can relax with soft, indirect lighting and candles. Lighting can make a small room look larger and more inviting or make a large space more cozy and intimate.
